Community guidelines

Hey, It’s You! is for people who met in real life and want to say hello again. These guidelines keep it kind and safe for everyone. They’re part of our Terms of Use.

On this page

  1. Be kind, be real
  2. What’s not allowed
  3. How reports work
  4. What happens when someone breaks the rules
  5. How to appeal

Be kind, be real

  • Be yourself: use your own name and a photo of you.
  • Be polite and respectful, in messages, on your profile and when you meet.
  • Respect a “no.” A connection doesn’t mean anyone owes you a reply, a meetup or more of their time.

What’s not allowed

  • Rude, abusive or discriminatory messages, personal attacks or hate speech.
  • Harassing, threatening, stalking or pressuring anyone, or contacting someone again after they’ve said no, stopped replying, taken a break or removed the connection.
  • Sexual messages, nudity or explicit photos.
  • Scams, impersonation, blackmail, or sharing someone’s private information without their permission.
  • Asking for money or payment details in chat, including payment apps, gift cards, crypto and bank transfers. Keep money out of chats, and never send money to someone you haven’t met.
  • Fake profiles, or anyone under 18.
  • Registered sex offenders, or anyone required to register as one.
  • Getting around a restriction, for example with another account, or getting back at someone for saying no or reporting you.
  • Reports you know aren’t true.

How reports work

If someone breaks these guidelines or makes you uncomfortable, tap Report profile on their connection page, or Report this message on a message, and pick a reason: Nudity or sexual content, Fake profile or impersonation, Harassment or unwanted contact, Threats or safety concern, May be under 18, Scam or fraud, Something else. You can also take a break from the conversation or remove the connection at any time.

  • Our team reviews every report. The person you report never sees it.
  • A report of nudity or sexual content, or of a fake profile, hides that profile photo right away while we review it.
  • If two different members report someone for harassment or explicit content within 14 days, their profile is paused at once until our team has looked at it.
  • We review reports as quickly as we can, urgent ones first.
  • We don’t share the outcome of a report, to protect everyone’s privacy.

If you’re ever in danger, call 911 first.

What happens when someone breaks the rules

Our team looks at what happened and the member’s history, and chooses the step that fits. The steps don’t have to go in order: serious offenses can lead straight to a suspension while we review, or to removal.

  1. Restriction. We can pause someone’s messaging or new connections for a while, for example after repeated attempts to share contact details or ask for money in chat.
  2. Suspension. We can suspend an account while we look into it, then lift the suspension or make it permanent.
  3. Removal. The account is suspended for good. Opening another account to get around it isn’t allowed. A membership bought in the app keeps renewing until it’s canceled in the phone’s subscription settings; refunds are up to the store where it was bought (see the Terms of Use).

How to appeal

Think we got it wrong? Tell us on our Help & contact page within 30 days of the decision. Our safety team reviews every appeal. We answer appeals as quickly as we can.
